Planteray Peru 2004

It smells rich and woody with some sweet cinnamon spice, balanced funk, and a touch of fruit. The palate is very pleasant with the wood, funk, and spice on one side, while syrupy orange is on the other. The balance is excellent as the alcohol doesn't become overwhelming. Vanilla and coconut are present. Some quince comes through as well. There are notes of nice milk chocolate. This is a truly exceptional rum that I would be delighted to sip. The nose is pleasant with some hedonism mixed with rugged wood and fireworks. The way the fruit, oils, vanilla, and butterscotch sneak in is amazing. The spices have a Christmas richness that I quite enjoy. The finish is a bit drying with lingering notes of tropical fruits and fireworks left overnight in a bucket of water. It isn't an extremely long finish, but it is a decently long one. The milk chocolate and wood do continue for a while, along with some notes of acceptable astringency (coffee?).

Amazing, with delightful notes of vanilla, caramel, cocoa, tropical fruits, baking spices, and dark roast coffee from the aroma to the finish. The palate has an oily texture with a slight astringency. There's a touch of bitterness on the finish. This was only a 50ml sample. I will definitely be looking for a full bottle.

This completely failed to impress me. I was hoping to detect notes from maturation in Ferrand casks, but found nothing remarkable. It's just an average quality rum, and considering its price, it's a poor value. El Dorado and Diplomatico are much superior choices compared to this one.

Taste: Butterscotch, vanilla, green apples, banana. A slightly bitter and dry finish to provide balance. Oak and cognac notes also present at the end.

A good whiskey to sip, not overly sweet.
