Peerless Small Batch Kentucky Straight Rye

111.5 proof, barrel/bottle S/N 150616105. It's been a long while since I've actually visited Peerless, but I recall being quite upset because, at the time, they didn't make bourbon but were still permitted on the Bourbon Trail. Since then, while I was fully convinced they make an excellent rye whiskey, I always thought of the brand as being conceited, more focused on sales and celebrity endorsements than regular customers. This partially consumed bottle I now possess was acquired by me taking it during a morale event at the conclusion of a mission, but I'll discuss that later. I had forgotten that every product Peerless offers is barrel proof, and if that isn't one of the best choices a distillery can make, an even better one is unknown to me. This also contributes significantly to the very deep, woody, caramel hue seen in the glass. The rye on the nose is moderate, mellowed to a pleasant cinnamon while also retaining youthful, brighter notes of grass and bread. Wonderful charred barrel notes of caramel and vanilla are also readily apparent, suggesting new barrel usage each time, though I cannot recall if this is true. The oak makes its presence known first, but the initial sensation from it is somewhat unrefined. This transitions into some cocoa powder, sophisticated rye bread, fresh cinnamon and other baking spices, and an herbal blend that doesn't settle on any single note. The rye coats the palate well, as any good rye whiskey should, but the younger notes from the oak and grain do as well, so the conclusion isn't as zesty as I had hoped. Peerless undoubtedly crafts exceptionally fine rye whiskey, and being among the rare distilleries to use sweet mash and primarily focus on rye, they are certainly a destination worth experiencing. However, a $90 MSRP for a bottle of rye is not justified, neither from them nor any other distillery I've ever encountered. Considering all I had to give for this was a scolding from the mission superior, I'd say it all worked out as a fairly standard win for me.

An outstanding rye that bourbon enthusiasts will truly appreciate. It's not an overpowering rye but does present a noticeable amount of rye spice. There's a touch of cherry at the finish, which is unusual for a rye. The finish is very pleasant, lingering warmly in the chest with some enjoyable spiciness left on the palate. It's quite impressive how much flavor these producers manage to pack into a rye that's likely around four years old. I wish the price were lower, but honestly, in 2023, with other brands increasing their prices, this one becomes more reasonable as their pricing has stayed consistent.

A dependable rye. I believe it belongs in the $50 to $60 price point, though I wouldn't be too upset paying retail. Mine was bottled at 112.6 proof and aged for four years. It's a rich and flavorful rye that isn't overwhelming but does pack a punch. It offers sweetness and a mild spice, reminding me a bit of Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye. It's good!

This bottle is quite appealing. It possesses spiciness and abundant flavor. On the nose, there are notes of aged fruit, orange, some cherry, and baking spices. The palate is very spicy, with toasted orange, baking spices, and a hint of smoke; after a few sips, more vanilla became apparent. It's an enjoyable experience.

Amazing aroma! Could use more flavor intensity. It's incredibly smooth, like drinking water.

Primarily cinnamon and citrus, with a hint of wood. The finish, once again, is drier.
