About this bottle

This dry, anise-flavored aperitif liqueur is selected specifically from Barrel No. 12, reportedly the barrel from which most visitors to the Kalogiannis distillery requested samples. It is bottled at 80 proof.

Smells like anise. That's all, with a hint of licorice. It tastes like sweet anise – exactly like a humbug. After a few sips, it has a mildly numbing effect on the tongue. The finish is interesting. It lacks length on the palate, but the anise flavor persists for a considerable time. Ouzo is challenging to rate, as it centers around a single primary aroma and flavor. Thus, tasting one ouzo is much like tasting them all, though some are certainly superior. I would classify this one as adequate, and nothing more. When mixed with water (preferably ice-cold), all ouzos become cloudy. This one develops an opaque whiteness, resembling coconut water. Strangely, I actually preferred this ouzo neat, as adding water introduced a metallic harshness. Once produced by a small family business, this brand is now owned by the beverage conglomerate Campari. It is widely available and popular – in the whiskey world, it's comparable to Johnnie Walker Red Label. It's acceptable, but better ouzos exist. Oh, and much like the "7" in Jack Daniel's, the "12" here is essentially meaningless. Any connection to Barrel no. 12, etc., ended long ago. "Adequate": 73/100 (2.25 stars)

A Greek herbal liqueur that begins aromatically with notes of herbs & spices; its rich & silky journey concludes with an anise lover's delight featuring hints of menthol, cinnamon & nutmeg. November 2016

Obvious anise, plus bubblegum and mint. Quite invigorating. A rather standard ouzo. Becomes softer with water or ice, revealing more tutti frutti notes.

Reminds me of Greece.
