Aroma: Abundant brown sugar, vanilla, and honey. Light caramel, apricot, and bubble gum. No discernible wood or oak notes. Body: Generally light-bodied but possesses a pleasant syrupy texture. Well-balanced with intricate sweet notes. Lacks complexity beyond the sweetness. Very smooth, with no harshness. Taste: Primarily vanilla and honey, with some toffee undertones. Faint wood notes emerge at the front, though the type of wood is indeterminable and not distinctly oaky. The bubblegum aroma from the nose reappears in the aftertaste. Overall: An excellent "patio rum." Perfect for sipping neat on a warm day in a tropical setting. It leans towards the lighter and sweeter end of the spectrum but offers good flavor. The website indicates it's aged 12+ years, yet it lacks the maturity expected of an aged rum. Nevertheless, it's highly enjoyable.

Bottle acquired as a surprise purchase at the Duty Free in La Romana. The aroma strongly suggests oak aging, highlighting a smooth and silky French vanilla instead of the typical sugarcane notes. It's sweet, with notes of caramelized pear, light spice, and fluffy white cake. The palate begins with prominent vanilla, sugarcane, and spices, particularly cinnamon. The alcohol emerges later, somewhat masking the initial sweetness. You then find that aged rum's woody, toasted sugar character, with subtle vanilla and pear puree in the background. Perhaps the texture could have been more oily; otherwise, it's an outstanding rum that stands out from larger Dominican distilleries.

I didn't have high expectations given the price and 38% ABV. However, Oliver & Oliver clearly knows their craft, producing a perfect consumer-grade sipping rum. It's not overpowering or bold in its flavor exploration, but sticks to the pleasant aroma of sugarcane, toffee, vanilla, and a touch of chocolate. The taste is very sweet with slightly bitter spices at the end. It has notes of sweet baked goods, slightly burnt caramel, and a hint of fruity acidity (like overripe fruit). It goes down smoothly and I believe it would appeal to most consumers.
