About this bottle

Brugal Extra Viejo is the standard expression in the Brugal portfolio. It consists of rum aged between three and eight years in former bourbon casks. While Brugal has been adjusting its profile towards lighter notes and experimenting with Oloroso sherry casks, aiming for a younger, international audience, this bottling represents a more traditional style for the brand.

Dara Quezada 3.3

Smells of sugarcane, vanilla, cocoa, molasses, and honey. A subtle oak wood aroma lingers in the background. A very pleasant and smooth aroma overall. On the palate, the liquid is very easy to drink, with diluted sugarcane, vanilla, toasted wood, and cocoa. The finish is a bit disappointing, with a dry, earthy alcohol and notes of caramelized brown sugar. The texture is very smooth, perhaps too much so, with a limited flavor range. A good, very easy-drinking entry-level rum, ideal for cocktails.

Kelvin Byrnes 2.0

Aroma: very sweet with hints of wood spice, vanilla, and distinct white peach. I also detect cola and a slight unpleasant glue note. Taste: initially vanilla and alcohol, then wood and some citrus Finish: a medium-short dry finish with wood notes Definitely not my preferred rum for neat sipping, but it pairs beautifully with coke, as it balances the coke's sweetness with woody flavors.

Joslyn Peck 2.8

Intriguing rum where the bourbon influence from aging is detectable. It's certainly smooth to drink, but the vanilla and orange notes are somewhat subtle. Better as a cocktail component than for sipping.

Corrine Hemphill 4.0

The aroma has jasmine and orange blossom, with a slight hint of chlorine. It's exceptionally smooth with a peppery finish. Dangerously easy to drink and delightful.

Daryl Madrigal 3.8

Dark, dry rum with notes of spice, oak bark, and cane sweetness. Decent rum if bought on sale. Otherwise, the price is quite inflated.

Andre Younger 2.8

Acceptable for mixed drinks but not ideal for drinking neat or on the rocks. It's spicy and has a noticeable alcohol presence.
