Okanagan Spirits BLK BRBN Cask Strength Bourbon-Style Whisky

A distillery visit allowed me to acquire a bottle of this and the Okanagan Spirits Rye. As I understand it, this is 51 percent corn with malted barley as the secondary grain, an unusual mash bill for a "bourbon". It could still be interesting. I've reduced this from 54 percent down to about 47 percent ABV. Nose: I'm struggling to identify distinct aromas initially, but they gradually emerge. I'm detecting some dill and peppery spice. There's also some barbecued pineapple in the background. A touch of bitter orange peel finishes what was initially a dull nose, adding a pleasant sweetness. Palate: A very nice creamy mouthfeel. It's not as sweet initially as I had expected. An earthy, grainy flavor comes first, followed by black pepper. The spice then takes over. I'm not getting the typical vanilla and brown sugar notes I usually associate with bourbon. Finish: Medium to long, and spicy. The peppery spice lingers on the tip and sides of the tongue. An earthy, grassy flavor provides some chewiness to the finish. Overall, this is very good. It doesn't have a typical bourbon flavor profile despite their aim to achieve that. This might be due to the high malt content. However, it's still very enjoyable and might particularly appeal to someone who typically considers themselves a scotch drinker.
