North Star Dalwhinnie 2008 Series 21

Nose: A delicate aroma dominated by fruit, nuts, grains, and a touch of oak. It's fragrant, not floral, but reminiscent of freshly baked blueberry and vanilla muffins, with the familiar Dalwhinnie honey note present. Faint balsa wood and light syrup are in the background. Palate: A gentle grain entry with a subtle ginger spice. As it develops, a more peppery spice emerges, though still mild. The initial taste is slightly sweet, transitioning to a drier character towards the end. The texture is acceptable but not noteworthy. Finish: Medium. A mildly spicy grain flavor with a salty undertone, similar to a salted caramel muesli bar. Independent bottlings of Dalwhinnie are uncommon. According to one person, this was acquired by mistake when it was erroneously included on a Diageo cask list. Though four casks were listed and an attempt was made to remove them upon discovery of the error, they were eventually permitted to be purchased. The chosen cask was a refill hogshead, but a decision was made to re-rack and finish it in an oloroso hogshead. It's uncertain if this significantly altered the profile, but it doesn't appear to have had a negative impact. I've never been particularly fond of Dalwhinnie; it always strikes me as a rather uninspiring malt. This is an adequate whisky, but the main draw for me was the opportunity to experience Dalwhinnie in a slightly different presentation. It didn't compel me to purchase a bottle.
