Nikka Tsuru Ceramic Decanter

This unique bottle is frequently available at whisky auctions, and I felt compelled to try a sample when the opportunity arose. It appears the reason it's often offered at auctions is that it isn't particularly good, and sellers are looking to offload it. The bottle itself is visually appealing, with cranes depicted at the base of the ceramic decanter. In fact, "Tsuru" translates to "Crane" in Japanese and serves as a fitting tribute to Nikka's founder, Masataka Taketsuru. It's bottled at 43% ABV and has a tawny color. The nose is somewhat weak and simple, offering notes of peaches, pleasant burnt hay, and a hint of chocolate. There's a general fresh herbal aroma. It improved significantly after the first sip. Pleasant caramel notes emerge, along with a subtle red fruitiness and a red apple scent. On the palate, it's very salty, almost like a salt bomb, followed by peaches. A second sip revealed toffee for a moment before the saltiness returned, accompanied by some faint citrus notes. The aftertaste is nearly nonexistent due to its very short duration. It finishes dry, with a brief peppery aftertaste and notes of new wood. Overall, this is a very disappointing whisky. The attractive decanter and its straightforwardness might mislead inexperienced drinkers, but it's not genuinely very good. My rating for it is a disappointing 65 out of 100.
