Trying this for the second time, I revisited it. It's a great dram packed with flavor, including floral notes, toffee, berries, peaches, pears, raisins, smoke, and a bit of chocolate. Having sampled Miyagikyo NAS/12 and Yoichi NAS/15/20, I'm wondering if Miyagikyo is smokier than Yoichi?

About this bottle
Established in 1969, the Miyagikyo distillery was created to complement the Yoichi distillery. Miyagikyo generally produces more delicate and fruity malts, in contrast to Yoichi, which is known for its peaty, oily malt whiskies. The pot stills at Miyagikyo are heated by steam instead of direct coal fire. As with all Nikka whiskies, the production aims for balance and complexity.

A very good whisky. I was lucky to sample this at a restaurant that still had it available. It has a nose of caramel/butterscotch vanilla, a taste of fruit/caramel, and is very smooth. It doesn't quite measure up to the Yoichi 15, Hakushu 12, and the Yamazaki 12.
It lacks the intensity of one brand, the floral notes of another, and the fruitiness of a third. No peat or smoke is detected. However, it is quite sweet and warming. It's well-rounded and unique.
Similar to another whisky, this begins wonderfully but concludes with a bitter, tannic flavor that isn't found in certain Japanese whiskies, which I find disappointing. A shame.
The aroma is vibrant. It presents as both thick and crisp, a characteristic that persists onto the taste. Hints of flowers and a gentle peat are present, sweet initially but becoming drier towards the end.
The nose was sweet and creamy, with notes of honey and brown sugars. The palate had fruit and pear, followed by a lingering spicy burn in the finish.
