About this bottle

This New Riff bottling builds upon the brand's 2021 Malted Rye Whiskey release. Like its predecessor, it is made entirely from 100% malted rye but is additionally aged in both oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. It is bottled at barrel strength and is not chill-filtered. Initially released in May 2022, New Riff is reissuing this expression for the holidays with a relaunch date of November 28, 2025. (SRP $69.99)

Curtis Morrell 4.5

The aroma is rich and full, with strawberry, bubble gum, cotton candy, cinnamon roll, mint julep, black raspberry, French toast, pink sea salt, and subtle oak. I had to actively search for any hint of ethanol. While most of the scents I noted are sweet, it all harmonizes well. The palate begins with intense mixed berry from the sherry cask influence, ripe date, fig, walnut, cocoa powder, dried apricot, orange zest, and a generous amount of lemongrass. The flavors are so powerful they become almost overwhelming after a while, but in an intensely enjoyable way. The fruit notes are definitely prominent. The exceptionally long finish offers spearmint, rye spice, toffee, barrel char, toasted oak, black pepper, and a cinnamon gummy bear. The mouthfeel is full-bodied, with some tongue-tingling dryness that doesn't quite align with the flavor profile as perfectly as I'd prefer. This is a stunning rye that truly sets itself apart. There were moments I even considered giving it a perfect 5.0, but then I questioned if I could award a 5 to a whiskey that was a bit harsh on my palate, and the answer is no. At $73.99, it offers incredible value, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I will purchase it again.

Aroma: Distinct cherry note at the forefront. Flavor: A foundational profile of classic rye spice and anise, with undertones of sweetness. A lengthy finish. Sherry notes are prominent in the latter part of the finish. Overall: Excellent product, would certainly purchase again.

Dustin Jacobs 4.0

Sweetness hits hard at first taste, present on the tongue and in the nose. It’s strange to have no lingering taste. A decent, sweet whiskey with a medium body.

Stephany Sharpe 4.5

I didn't have high hopes, but it was a pleasant surprise. It has dark fruit and spice notes, with a satisfying mouthfeel. The aroma was amazing, though I wished the finish lasted longer.

Dawn Broughton 4.0

Smoothness all the way to the tongue with a whisper of cherry and caramel. The aroma extends through the entire palate down to the throat with very little bite.

Skylar Le 4.0

A very enjoyable whiskey, easy to consume, with smoothness derived from the rye.
