About this bottle

The second Sour Mash Single Malt release from New Riff utilizes the same mash bill as the first, consisting entirely of malted barley varieties: Golden Promise, Maris Otter, Scottish peated barley malt, and two beer-inspired mash bills derived from Barleywine and Belgian Quadrupel recipes. While the previous edition used barrels aged 7-8 years, this bottling features 9-year-old barrels alongside Madeira cask-aged malt whiskey. It is bottled at 114.5 proof without chill-filtration. It will be available at the distillery's gift shop on August 30, 2024, followed shortly by online and retail distribution. The SRP is $69.99.

The nose has notes of chocolate madeira and sour barley, with a tannic quality. It's followed by almond, nougat, lemongrass, and mossy green tea leaves, with bittered cocoa. It's astringent and has a solid finish. This is a unique take on a single malt. It's a mood pour; one might love it or hate it depending on the day.

The aroma is maple, leading to earthy tobacco notes on the palate along with barrel char, and a leathery finish. It's uniquely amazing. If only it had an oily mouthfeel, it would be perfect.

While I typically enjoy New Riff, I was quite let down by this. It presented as sour, bitter espresso. It needs more richness and sweetness.
