About this bottle

Although there were early 2000s initiatives to establish Scotland's most northerly distillery, these plans were not realized. Consequently, Highland Park retains this distinction. Nevertheless, a new venture now permits the title of Scotland's most northerly aged whisky, at least partially. This blended malt Scotch whisky comprises six single malts matured in first-fill sherry casks within mainland Scotland. It then undergoes additional aging in new French oak for one winter on Unst, an island in the Shetland Islands. The name Muckle Flugga originates from the prominent lighthouse situated near the warehouse where the whisky matures.

One would expect a wine and food event to feature superior whisky, so the name Muckle Flugga shouldn't have been a shock. It seemed like a pun, possibly referencing an offensive two-word phrase, but no, it's a small, rocky island north of Unst in the Shetlands. It's a Speyside, matured for its final year on Unst. It's not a bad drink, a solid 3 out of 5. Much superior to that Broxburn disaster. Matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks.
