Mount Gay Black Barrel

An intense, dark rum from a specific distillery in Barbados, named for its deeply charred finishing casks. It's a blend of rums aged 3 to 7 years, with most spirit from double pot stills and the rest from column stills. All rum was matured in American whiskey barrels and then finished in ex-Bourbon casks, bottled at 43% ABV. It presents an aromatic profile with notes of rum-raisin cream, vanilla toffee, allspice, and a hint of brown butter. The palate is bold with gingerbread, toffee, cinnamon, and cracked pepper, leading to a long, rich, and spicy finish. Sampled in March 2021.

Sweet vanilla and citrus flavors with a nice oak char balance. It's excellent neat, on the rocks, or in a rum old fashioned. It's a bit too sweet for a rum sour but performs very well in most other dark rum cocktails. I enjoy it most with a large ice cube for sipping. It's one of the best tasting and most versatile rums available, especially considering its price point, offering a quality far above its cost.

The nose isn't particularly powerful, but I detect sweet corn and some char at the end. It's just decent for drinking straight, but I bought it primarily for my egg nog this holiday season, and it's working well for that!

Aged 3 to 7 years in American whiskey barrels, and finished for seven months in deeply charred Bourbon barrels. It's amber with caramel and a sense of space, and has a smooth toffee flavor.

Ethanol and a bit of char on the nose; vanilla, brown sugar, molasses, and oak; slightly harsh; thin texture; molasses and char finish.
