Mossburn Vintage Casks Linkwood 12 Year Cask Strength

From The Party Source. This Linkwood was distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2023 after 12 years, with time spent in ex-cognac barrels. The nose presented red grapes, raisins, Maraschino cherries, sweet cereal, a hint of brine, pine needles, light char, and noticeable alcohol. A truly amazing nose. The palate brought fresh grapes and cherries, plum, Fig Newton, malt syrup, salted caramel, and mint. The lengthy finish featured raisins, figs, saltwater taffy, cocoa, grain, Red Hots, and moderate alcohol. A previous pick from this store, a Craigellachie 13Y in ruby port, was excellent, but this expression is superior. A seasonal event offered tastings of various spirits, including this and a Ben Nevis 10Y in ex-Madeira casks. While the Ben Nevis was great, this Linkwood's unique cognac finish was striking. I purchased it immediately, especially since it was less expensive than the Ben Nevis. Considering its cost, this is the finest Scotch I've encountered. Even without price consideration, it ranks in my top three. I haven't tried the standard Mossburn blends, but these single barrels are outstanding. I've already acquired two more bottles. Its distinctive finish sets it apart. Most cask strength Scotches I've experienced are either Islay, sherry-forward Speyside, or unpeated ex-bourbon. The cognac notes integrate exceptionally well; I'm surprised this finishing method isn't more common. I strongly endorse picking up any Mossburn store pick you find.

The opening aroma is oily and smoky, but a soft honey emerges in the aftertaste.
