Mossburn Ben Nevis 2012 (Party Source)

This is a special pick from a store that I bought on sale for $78 while visiting companions. These casks are very active Madeira casks. Tropical fruits are bright and prominent. Ben Nevis is a robust, heavy spirit though, and it holds up beautifully. Ben Nevis uses brewer's yeast instead of distiller's yeast, and I've always detected a very dark brown bread note that brings to mind malty beer. This Madeira cask introduces yellow tropical fruit, making the whisky truly shine. They were offering samples of this at the store. After tasting it, I purchased two bottles. A significant amount of Ben Nevis is sent to Japan for blends, so finding independently bottled options with double-digit aging is a treat.
