About this bottle

Master distiller Brian Nation selected the whiskeys for Midleton Very Rare 2020 during his final tenure in the role. The blend incorporates whiskeys aged between 13 and 35 years, with maturation in lightly charred ex-bourbon American oak. While both single pot still and single grain whiskeys were chosen, this year's release features a greater proportion of single pot still whiskey and increased use of refill barrels compared to prior vintages. Availability began in Ireland in October 2020, with subsequent releases planned for the UK, US, Australia, Germany, Canada, and Global Travel Retail.

Alan Dill 4.5

NOSE: Initial top notes of cane sugar and vanilla combine with pepper and nutmeg spices, complemented by sweet orchard fruits and white chocolate fudge, all layered over notes of polished antique wood. This shows an interesting balance between spirit and wood due to the complex interaction from many years in fine oak casks. TASTE: An initial burst of tangy fruit sweetness from orange peel and sweet pear creates a succulent texture, while pot still spices build over time, adding a mild prickle of chili oil. The presence of charred oak remains consistently in the background, balancing the fruits and spices. FINISH: A satisfyingly long finish where the fruits gradually fade, allowing the oak and spices to linger until the very end.

Shannon Barron 4.5

Exceptionally smooth and subtle. Almost a sugary sweetness with a syrupy or honey-like texture.
