Willie Sifuentes 3.5

Michel Couvreur virtual tasting, October 21, 2021. Whisky #3 Nose: Salty coastal peat, ash, kelp, musty herbs, a driftwood campfire on the shore. As it develops, there's a hint of gunpowder. Palate: A sweet, oily, spicy initial taste (ginger, white pepper). Candied orange peel and cocoa emerge during development, with creamy vanilla, red grapes, and a touch of iodine. Finish: Medium to short. Smoky, sweet with a lingering spiciness. I hadn't explored Michel Couvreur whiskies before, but a recent virtual tasting event featuring five expressions sparked my curiosity. This strongly resembles Caol Ila – if that's not the origin of the spirit for this expression, anyone could easily be mistaken, as it powerfully exhibits Caol Ila's distinct maritime characteristics. This very enjoyable whisky was aged for 9 years in small PX sherry casks, but the oak's influence is well-balanced and doesn't overpower the distillate. It is clear, crisp, and sharp, yet not harsh. I liked it a great deal, but as with all the younger, lower-proof Michel Couvreur whiskies I sampled at the event, I couldn't see myself purchasing a bottle when the same quality and style are available from numerous Scottish distilleries, and at a significantly lower price. "Good": 83/100 (3.5 stars)

This bottle was a gift, so I lack specific details about it. This single malt was produced in Old Meldrum, Highlands, but was matured in Sherry casks within Burgundy caves in France. I'd suggest this background makes it an interesting selection for your evening.
