I had a glass of this during a business trip recently and took a picture of the bottle so I would never try it again. This is the first Mezcal I have ever tasted, and I wish someone had warned me about how smoky it was. It was only after the first sip that I realized none of the flavors appealed to me. To be fair, I wasn't sure what to expect and was genuinely surprised and almost overwhelmed by the difference. If I were being sarcastic, I'd say it was aged and fermented in a burning Goodyear tire – it was that bad for me. The body was mostly smoke and earthy notes, along with a taste I associate with green peppers or unripe vegetables. However, when I've disliked a whiskey or gin, I usually give it time, but considering the cost of this, I believe I will skip this Mezcal. One final thought: I strongly believe in "drink what you like and can afford," and if you enjoy this, more power to you, but I disliked everything about it, from the price to the taste. If any Mezcal fans out there in this vast drinking world have suggestions, I'm open to them, but please keep my issue with the smokiness in mind.

About this bottle
Arroqueño agave, which requires over 20 years to mature, imparts a special character to this mezcal. Marca Negra Mezcal produces it in limited quantities using traditional methods under Master Mezcalero Alberto Ortiz. The agave is harvested ripe in Santa Maria La Pila, Oaxaca, and its hearts are cooked in earthen pit ovens with mesquite-heated stones. A large stone wheel, the tahona, crushes the cooked agave before it is fermented with spring water in wooden vats, using wild airborne yeasts for weeks. It is then twice distilled to proof in a copper pot-still.
