About this bottle

Metze's Select Bourbon is the second direct offering from MGP and the first intended for retail sale. Marketed as a "limited edition Indiana straight bourbon whiskey," the 2015 Medley version is bottled at 93 proof. This release is a blend of three MGP bourbons: 59% from a 2008 bourbon with 21% rye, 38% from a 2006 bourbon also with 21% rye, and 3% from a 2006 bourbon containing a high 36% rye. It was anticipated to be available in stores by September 2015, with a production run of 6,000 bottles.

Francis Johnston 4.0

I was enthusiastic to see a bottling from the distillery's own stock. The fact that it was named after their master distiller was a positive sign. While I do appreciate higher proof/barrel proof spirits, I found this initial market release to be lacking in flavor and to sip like diluted whiskey. It certainly doesn't justify its price point. I will not be buying it again.

Ida Mast 5.0

Sweet scents of cherry blossom, vanilla, and cream soda on the nose. For a spirit with 93 proof, the palate isn't as intense as one might expect and offers rye notes of black pepper, caramel, coconut, and spice. The finish endures and truly highlights the sweeter notes of baking spice.

Dion Schaefer 4.0

A good bourbon. Adding a little water helps reduce the heat from the 93 proof. The taste is distinctly spicy but finishes with a sweet, mellow aftertaste.

Alvaro Craven 4.0

More rye spice on the nose and upfront, with a distinct pepper note as well. It then softens with longer notes of sweet caramel and vanilla, leading to a medium-length finish.

Marylou Rees 4.0

Incredibly smooth. Hints of vanilla present.

Theron Humphries 4.0

Smooth and sweet.
