Defiant American Single Malt Whisky

A friend gave this to me. I'm primarily a Bourbon drinker, not usually a malt whiskey or Scotch enthusiast, so please consider that. The aging process, or lack thereof, made me a bit hesitant. However, it was a gift, so here's my take. The nose presented honey, fresh malt, a faint bandaid aroma, and very strong notes of tequila. I didn't find the smell appealing. The palate was sweet, with hints of honey, tequila, and vanilla. The finish was brief, with a touch of lingering vanilla and a slightly bitter aftertaste. As I mentioned, I don't often drink this type of whiskey, but this didn't even strongly resemble Scotch or other malt varieties. It just seemed young and lacked complexity; the singular note seemed to be tequila? I understand this company takes a 'defiant' stance on whiskey production, but it didn't work for me. It's like a child defying their parents, but in this case, the parent is Father Time, and he cannot be outsmarted.

Evaluated at room temperature in a Norlan glass, without water or ice. The 82 proof spirit presents a nose of honey, vanilla, and orange peel, greatly exceeding initial expectations. Some alcohol is present in the aroma, though this may have reduced as the bottle has been open for a while. The palate reveals a different character, perceived as hot, young, and raw. Allowing it to coat the mouth reveals some maltiness that balances the initial alcoholic intensity. Flavor profiles are difficult to discern, with perhaps a hint of citrus alongside the malt. The finish is moderately present on the mid-tongue but absent elsewhere. An enjoyable orange-vanilla note remains.

A well-balanced American Single Malt Whiskey made by Blue Ridge Distillers in Golden Valley, North Carolina. They use water from an aquifer located directly beneath the distillery. Crafted with premium Two-row malted brewer's barley, yeast, and water, it undergoes a unique aging process using premium American white oak, toasted for a perfect finish. It begins with a grainy character, featuring notes of malt and vanilla. As it matures, a rich profile emerges with notes of caramel and honeyed fruit, culminating in a warm, spicy finish with a touch of oak. March 2019 / August 2022

I read the creation story. Quite original; perhaps a blend of this and barrel aging would be ideal? I really dislike Scotch, but this is enjoyable despite a whisper of it. Otherwise, it's buttery sweet with notes of caramel and vanilla. It goes down smoothly, I enjoy it. Some opinions I've seen seem illogical. It's new, distinct, and delicious simply because it's not aged like other bourbons. Also, I'm from North Carolina, so I might be a little partial.

As someone from North Carolina, I genuinely hope for the success of this brand. However, as a consumer of scotch and bourbon, I cannot say I am a fan, despite my desire to be. The aging of whiskey is crucial for its quality, and I fear their accelerated process does not yield the type of spirit I seek.

Fresh honeycomb, coconut, and vanilla on the nose. The palate isn't as sharp as some have reviewed, but it presents layers of good spice, caramel, toasty nuttiness, leather, and sweet vanilla. The finish is the highlight of this pour, with good legs and a rollercoaster of sweet baking spices.
