About this bottle

This rye honors Thomas H. Handy, a renowned 19th-century New Orleans bartender credited with first incorporating rye into the Sazerac cocktail, which was previously made with Cognac. This straight rye, presented uncut and unfiltered, is akin to the George T. Stagg bourbon, as both are released at their full cask strength. This particular edition was produced in the spring of 2009 and matured on the 4th and 7th levels of Warehouses I, K, and M at Buffalo Trace.

I’m not sure which year this was since I had a dram at a local bar I’ve been frequenting for years but it was unbelievable. The ABV doesn’t even hit you hard. It’s so refined. Chocolate cola is immediate followed by some sweet caramel and muddled grains. The rye notes you expect only hit you in the initial way down from the palate. The finish was tremendously long. Unbelievable. A top 5 whisky for me so far. 100/100. It’s hard to fault it. I even kept the glass by my side for half an hour and the notes changed across that period in so many ways. I was fortunate enough to grab a shot for $36. What a bargain but I’d willingly pay a LOT more a shot for this. And the price of the bottle is easily worth it. 100/100

Handy is among my favorites. I had the chance to experience this traditional bottling and I'm so pleased I took it. I typically avoid reading other assessments before writing my own. However, I reviewed the expert review that was posted. It is accurate. Chocolate and spice... Mexican Hot Chocolate. The scent has a faint medicinal quality that prevents this from scoring higher. I'm 99% certain I've given other bottlings higher scores. It actually requires a few drops of water to reveal its best qualities. The conclusion is incredible and enduring. (my preferred aspect)

Absolutely fantastic! It delivers a classic, high-proof, premium aged rye experience. I'd be eager to compare it directly with Kentucky Owl Batch 1; I suspect it would be a very close competition. The finish lingers, and the palate is sweet. Superb!

The thick consistency hints at a delightful experience... The aroma offers both sweetness and spice... Your taste buds will rejoice! A remarkably well-integrated pleasure, if you can manage to find a serving.

Jeanie Barnes 4.5

Cherries jubilee, vanilla, tobacco, rye. The finish is long and the texture is very smooth. The price for the pour was also excellent!

Brantley Dotson 4.8

Vanilla and sugar on the nose, with a sharp bite, and a brief finish, yet an outstanding spirit.
