McHenry Federation Gin

This is a second tasting, conducted on September 12, 2024. My initial impressions remain valid, but I'm revisiting this gin to bring it to the attention of fellow Australians who might be unfamiliar with it. It's not widely available in Australian chain liquor stores, which is unfortunate, as it's a fantastic gin and this small, family-operated distillery deserves recognition. This gin exhibits a perfect harmony between juniper and citrus-forward Australian botanicals, complemented by a sweet creaminess. This balance makes it ideal for a G&T, where the tonic's bitterness precisely contrasts the gin's sweetness, or for a negroni. It also works well in a traditional "wet" martini, though those who prefer very dry "modern" martinis might find it too sweet. The price has seen a slight increase since my first review six years ago, but $85 for a 700ml bottle represents good value, and two bottles qualify for free shipping anywhere in Australia. "Outstanding": 93/100 (5 stars) ------------------------------------------------ Nose: Gentle, uplifting floral notes are balanced by juniper and peppery scents, with a hint of citrus and licorice. Aromas of lemon, pine needles, and spiced fruit are present. Exceptionally beautiful, delicate yet full of character. Palate: An initial taste of dusky orange citrus and licorice. It has a rich, oily texture. As it develops, fresh spicy layers emerge, leading to a foundation of crisp, tangy juniper. The texture is creamy, rich, and enveloping. Finish: Medium length. Perfectly balanced notes of juniper, citrus, and warm spice persist to the end. Possesses a wonderful texture and a full flavor without being overpowering. It is simultaneously dry, sweet, earthy, and fragrant. The texture is rich and creamy, almost oily, when consumed neat, and is stunning in a G&T or cocktail. This special release from the southernmost family-run distillery globally features hand-foraged botanicals from every Australian state, including Kakadu plum, lemon myrtle, strawberry gum, mountain pepperleaf, cinnamon myrtle, celery-top pine, wattleseed, quandong, and, of course, juniper. It's a prime example of the sophisticated gins currently emerging from Australia, offering nuance without being overwhelming on the palate. Australian gin has rapidly gained prominence in the market over the past two years, and this is my favorite among the many excellent local gins available.
