Macleod's Islay Single Malt

I tried a 2020 bottling of this unexpected Islay malt, which was unfamiliar to me until I found it on sale for just over 20 euros. It turned out to be an excellent value! Nose: A rich and welcoming Islay brininess, with evident sherry cask influence. Smoky, with notes of fresh campfire and BBQ, leather, and seasoned oak. The nose is very well-balanced. Taste: Brine, smoke, leather, oak, and sherry. It's simultaneously sweet and a bit spicy. This shows quality cask management and blending. It tastes like an 8-year-old. It's smooth and sippable, with a fine harmony of Islay peat and sherry. Finish: Medium. Sherry, smoke, leather, and oak fade into brine, leaving a lingering iodine note. Final thoughts: This is a fantastic non-age-statement whisky that I would highly recommend as an introduction to Islay malts. I haven't been able to find reliable information about its distillery of origin. My best guess is Lagavulin.

The experience was short-lived but offered initial sweet notes. The body is somewhat bland and lacks complexity, primarily exhibiting iodine, a touch of hay, and malt. The finish is not overly long but presents a solid peaty, spicy conclusion. The peat is light to medium in this dram. Could it replace Ardbeg, Bowmore, or Laphroaig? Fans of those whiskies likely won't enjoy this as much. However, for its price, it serves as a good introduction to Islay whisky or a casual daily scotch.

Nose: Faint peat and phenols. Hints of brine and iodine. A whisper of smoky bacon at the end. Palate: Medicinal smoke, vanilla, and smoky bacon bits. Finish: Moderate and somewhat lacking in depth. Smoky bacon bits persist. Quite good considering the cost. This originates from the same company that produces Glengoyne, Tamdhu, and Rosebank distilleries, and also owns Smokehead.

Meets all my criteria for an Islay at a much lower cost. Plenty of excellent peaty, smoky flavor with a smooth finish. As another person mentioned, it's not outstanding, but for the price, it would be difficult to find a rival.

A pleasant Islay spirit. It's smooth and I'll definitely keep it on hand. Offers great Islay character for the cost. Give it a look. It won't change your life, but it's a very good spirit and offers good value.

Smoky and a good start, but the finish was a bit disappointing. After Laphroaig, I wanted to try another Islay, but I just wished it was Laphroaig.
