Aroma: Green apples, pears, and alcohol. It has a slight foxy smell and notes of acetone and fruit salad that's past its prime. Lacks any depth. Taste: A warm, sweet start, a bit yeasty and like cardboard, but pleasant. The fruit flavors from the smell are present in the mouth, but there's no evolution; the initial taste just transitions into the aftertaste. The texture is creamy, similar to how vodka can be creamy. Finish: Medium to short. It has a mildly herbal and very subtle metallic quality. That almost-off fruit flavor reappears, like canned apricots that have been open for days. It's unusual, but not off-putting. This is essentially unaged malted barley spirit, diluted to 46.1% ABV. It should be evaluated on its own or against other unaged spirits. The aroma will seem familiar yet strange to any whisky drinker because the absence of wood influence is noticeable. While some compare it to grappa or vodka, it most closely resembles a Dutch gin with very few botanicals, though it's less refined and feels incomplete, as expected. Trying unaged spirit is something I recommend every enthusiast do at least once, usually at a distillery or tasting. It provides a clear understanding of the distillate's contribution to whisky and highlights why wood aging is universal. This spirit is pleasant neat or on ice and works well in cocktails. I tested it in drinks typically made with whisky, bourbon, rye, gin, and vodka, and it performed adequately in each, but didn't outperform the intended spirit. I found this experiment interesting, but it won't be a regular purchase. While tasting unaged spirit is valuable, buying a full bottle is different. I consumed half of my 500ml bottle trying it in various ways and shared samples with friends, but the bottle now sits untouched, likely to remain that way. Score: 81/100 (3 stars)
