I'm starting to explore American single malts and am enjoying what I've encountered so far. Texas is producing some excellent whiskeys, and Balcones has definitely earned the respect of whiskey drinkers. The color is light hay, with an astringent nose that is nevertheless malty and sweet. The palate brings orchard fruit and caramel, with the malt playing a subtle yet noticeable role. The finish is medium to long, with the orchard fruit lingering. There's a lot of depth here; I'm very pleased with this. It's a great alternative to typical ryes and bourbons.
