Lochlea Single Cask Ex-Islay Peated Cask

This is my initial tasting of a bottle from Lochlea. It is quite intriguing to observe a brand-new distillery, run by farmers, producing such a remarkable whisky that can rival any fine peated spirit. Especially considering they are a Lowland distillery, not typically known for peated whiskies. Despite being a fairly new spirit, it does not feel that way. It lacks the oiliness of a Port Charlotte but is not thin either. It exhibits excellent legs and a scottish mist effect when a bit of water is added. It demonstrates considerable integrity by being unfiltered and uncolored. The aroma presents a prominent lemon note, some orange, and a touch of green apple. Further into it, caramel toffee emerges, and when combined with the citrus, it resembles a lemon cake. The palate shifts to a spicier sensation, like white pepper, ginger powder, star anise, followed by more lemony notes with cereal. There was a subtle cereal presence initially that then vanished. The finish is less intense, with a slight citrusy character. Given the buzz surrounding it, I had anticipated a bit more complexity from a single cask. These bottles are not always affordable. I was fortunate to find this one on sale and acquired a couple. Cheers!
