Limeburners Peated Whisky

“Created and hand-bottled at the Great Southern Distillery on the harbor in Albany, this sophisticated and elegant single malt whisky is produced in traditional small batch copper stills using premium local barley. This whisky is crafted with peat sourced near the ‘Valley of the Giants’ and has been aged in an ex-bourbon American oak barrel.” Nose: Very light and refreshing. Fragrant malt with a slight grittiness, cardamom spice. Light citrus, very subtle vanilla, mulled pear, and the faintest hint of damp earth and petrichor. Palate: Light texture, with forward fragrant spice notes: cardamom and cinnamon transitioning to cracked pepper. Delicate earthy and vegetal smoke is intertwined with young fresh oak and lightly caramelized malt. Finish: Medium. Light wood shavings, dried banana, possibly a nutty note and very subtle cool vegetal smoke. If you've tried the American Oak from Limeburners, this won't be a surprise. The strong oak influence on the Limeburners newmake results in a slightly gristy malt with banana undertones. The addition of gentle peat creates a cooling, damp woodland sensation. Everything here is well-executed, but its distinctiveness might be underdeveloped. This is clearly an introduction to Limeburners' peat expressions, yet it falls short of the profound impact of the Darkest Winter bottling.
