Ledaig Present Future TWE

Each year, the whisky show allows attendees to sample numerous spirits, from common to highly exclusive. Regrettably, I never had the opportunity to visit London during that period. However, for this event, a selection of their own chosen bottles are made available annually. These are consistently excellent, representing their curated taste. The previous year's theme for these representatives was “past”, “future”, and “present”. A bottle was selected for each of these stages. For the “past”, an 11-year-old Glenlivet fully matured in Oloroso sherry casks. For the “future”, a 43-year-old Inverogordon. And for the “present”, this sherry-finished Ledaig. The bottles themselves are quite striking—last year's featured a holographic label. (This year's, I believe, had a label visible only under black light). So, putting the marketing aside, let's get to the core of it—how does it compare? A salty aroma, yet the sherry influence is also perceptible. The taste is akin to saltwater taffy. It's rich and viscous, balancing sweet and salty. Exceptionally well-crafted, especially considering its price point (around $70, I believe). If you appreciate Talisker Distiller's Edition, you will likely enjoy this.

While Ledaig doesn't always match the quality of smoky Islay whiskies, its top expressions are certainly competitive. This particular one stands out, offering a harmonious blend of smoke and sherry notes with a rich body. The aroma presents a nutty character, underscored by a touch of savory smoke and fig preserves. The taste, though not overly intricate, provides a satisfyingly substantial feel and a whisper of orange confection. The conclusion is extended, arid, and slightly spicy, leaving a subtle mint sensation. A pleasing hint of savory sulfur also emerges at the beginning and conclusion. I sampled this during its 2018 debut at The Whisky Show and appreciate a friend allowing me to experience it again under less spirited circumstances. It surpasses the standard 10-year release.

Smoky meat notes with a tart barbecue essence. The aroma is full of peat and smoked meat, with hints of citrus and angel food cake. It has a thick, oily mouthfeel. This peat powerhouse moves from tangy meats to earthy smoke, with a significant sherry presence. The palate finishes with a salty, sea water character.
