Ledaig 12 Year Discovery (Gordon & Macphail)

While doing some early Christmas shopping, I found this 12-year-old Ledaig from Gordon & MacPhail's Discovery Range. I've enjoyed every Ledaig I've tried and had good experiences with other private bottlings, so my expectations were high for this one. At just 50 euros a bottle, it seemed like a safe bet... The aroma presents pleasant smoke mingled with grassy peat notes. The taste adds sweet and delicious baked apples, along with some gentle sweet spices, soft caramel/syrup undertones, and a hint of smoked meat (or perhaps a nice baked steak?). The finish persists, offering predominantly sweet yet smoky meat flavors. This introductory bottling from Gordon and MacPhail did not disappoint. When compared to the standard Ledaig 10, this 12-year-old version is its equal: slightly more aged and slightly pricier. For its cost, I believe this is an excellent dram.

I liked this one. I usually enjoy drinking this brand. The reason for my rating is that the standard 10-year-old expression is a solid choice, and this one didn't add anything significant while costing more. I'll stick with the 10-year-old in the future. I'm also discovering that, much like with other peated Scotches, a lot of time in the barrel isn't really needed or desired. It might soften the edges a bit, but that's where the unique character and flavor of this peated whisky come from. I believe the sweet spot for this brand is the core 10-year-old, which offers great value, and younger independent bottlings finished in sherry, wine, or port casks. Around 5-7 years seems to be ideal.

Pleasant smoke, bready but not heavy on the tongue. Finish tastes like shortbread.

A distinct smoked cured meats flavor is present here. And that's a positive.

Heavy smoky peat. Rich, smooth, well-integrated cask influence. Very pleasing.

Stronger at the initial contact, very warming as it goes down the throat.
