Laphroaig 10 Year Cask Strength (Batch 14)

This spirit offers a seaside vibe, starting with a strong peat character. It isn't overwhelmingly smoky, but the yeasty, characteristic medicinal notes feel balanced. There's also a damp, earthy moss scent mingling with the aroma of floral Earl Grey tea. The peat is dominant on the palate, with a noticeable oak presence. Sweetness-wise, it trends toward the drier side. It's like an enhanced version of the Quarter Cask, but with higher proof and a touch of rye spice. Instead of intense smokiness, the focus is on ocean and brine flavors. A faint apple note might be detectable. It provides a robust, mouth-coating sensation. The conclusion is lengthy, though a bit dry, leaving behind traces of ash and oak. While not my top choice among the ten cask strength 10-year-olds I've sampled, this whisky still lives up to its quality reputation. Its drier, spiced profile differs from the rich, sweet BBQ and stewed fruit flavors I usually prefer. Nevertheless, it's a solid dram for any peat enthusiast! I just favor other expressions more. Comparing side-by-side with Laphroaig 10 CS, Lagavulin 16, and Ardbeg An Oa. Laphroaig 10 CS batch 14 - a bit nutty? quite smooth, with some sweetness. enjoyable without water. pleasant smoke. oily/sticky mouthfeel which lasts, love. 4.25-4.5 Laga 16 - smoother than Frog 10 CS, sweeter than Frog. Meaty smoke like bbq. feels a bit lighter mouthfeel. 4.0 An Oa - much sweeter than both, also meaty smoke, but less than laga. 3.75-4.00

Powerful, the 58.6% ABV is noticeable, with a very clear, predominantly, and distinct smokiness, yet it's exquisite and very well integrated. The palate starts out rich and sweet but finishes dry and smoky, with an intense smoky character. Very potent, with evident alcohol, but very enjoyable; a few drops are needed to lighten it and appreciate it fully. Long finish.

While I might detect a resemblance to the standard 10-year expression, this one is more potent, less sweet, and more direct. Aroma: fresh, saline, smoky, and honeyed. Palate: seaweed, salt, smoke, iodine. It burns intensely. Adding a bit of water makes it sweet, honeyed, and smoky. Surprisingly sweet and well-rounded.

Nose: Medicinal, band-aid like. Palate: Well-balanced, savory, briny. Finish: Long. Comments: Requires water to reduce the alcohol content and enhance its character.

Compared to the 13-year-old, this one has a bit more oak and a darker profile. I prefer it slightly, but it's still quite potent for my taste. Honestly, a splash of water might have helped.
