Lammermoor Single Malt 3 1/2 years age small cask

My experience with New Zealand whiskey distilleries hasn't been great so far; workshops were unremarkable, Thompsons were average, and Cardrona was mediocre and overpriced. I've finally found two promising ones: Lammermoor and Divergence. When I spoke with the owners, who are farmers, I saw a good sign, recalling Dingle's head distiller also came from a farming background. Given this is a lesser-known distillery, here's some background: Lammermoor Station was known for illegally producing 'moonshine' for travelers on the early gold mining Dunstan Trail. In the early 1900s, the Elliot family began farming the 15,000-acre station in New Zealand's Central Otago region. Although the distillery was no longer active, the current distillers' grandfather remembered the station's original still, which he found after returning from the war. Unfortunately, they couldn't locate it, so they started from scratch. I didn't take detailed notes as my handwriting was poor at the time, but I was impressed. They are currently distributing this without charge, instead giving it away with official hip flasks (which are quite pricey, so they are effectively selling it, though I'm unsure why they don't sell them separately). Regardless, they have good palates, and I look forward to their future releases.
