A limited edition single malt from New Zealand, crafted with laureate barley smoked by Manuka wood and matured for three years in new French oak barrels. It is bottled without chill filtration and retains its natural color. Nose: Immediate smoky tar and ash notes, layered with hints of burnt coffee and a sweet, herbal, vegetal undertone. Intriguing, though somewhat contradictory. Palate: A rich texture with tannins, bitter coffee, and dark caramel. It also presents cloves, spice, floral notes, and dark chocolate, with a nutty citrus character. There's a great deal happening, but it feels overly chaotic and out of balance, regrettably. Finish: Medium length, with grainy ash, toasted barrel notes, and spice. Excessive wood influence, particularly from the aggressive and unrefined French oak. It's disappointing to see fine wood treated without skill. The tannins become unpleasantly strong. The main tragedy is the presence of excellent smoky notes, which are unfortunately at odds with the delicate floral elements. An unusual product from this region that certainly doesn't justify its cost. Whiskey tasting event #176
