Thompson Saison cask single cask

For our regular online tasting, a friend generously provided a selection of spirits from around the globe. First was a single cask 14-year-old Tamdhu (Scotland). Second was the 2022 Chichibu Peated Edition (Japan). Third was the Chattanooga Islay Finish (America) bottled at 47.5% ABV. Fourth, I think, was this Thomson Saison Yeast Cask #39 (New Zealand) bottled at 53.4% ABV. The aroma begins robust and malty, then introduces subtle tart red fruit and a hint of oak spice with noticeable alcohol. The palate has a moderate body, starting with slightly tart red berries that rapidly shift to a mild peppery spice before creamy malt notes emerge, joined by light coffee, then tart citrus and red berries that develop into gentle baking spices with noticeable alcohol. The finish is moderately long, beginning with a smooth, tart blend of citrus and red berries, which recedes to reveal rich malt and chocolate-covered espresso beans. Overall, a truly distinctive drink that evokes a pleasant red ale, but without the fizz and with a much higher alcohol content. I'm delighted that New Zealand is now producing some quality spirits, and I believe this is a worthwhile purchase at $70 for an unusual style of drink.

I'm enjoying a sample provided by a friend. I tasted it neat in a NEAT glass after letting it rest. The aroma has hints of vanilla and caramelized sugar in the background. Up front, it's dry grass, almond, and faint notes of young, green fruit like unripe grapes. Quite interesting. On the palate, I'm struck by a silky mouthfeel. There's more sweetness than the aroma suggested. Caraway and dark chocolate notes appear after an initial wave of sweet, dark raisins and a molasses-like flavor that is much drier than syrup but carries its dark characteristics. The finish is relatively quick, with a blend of sweet and bitter notes that linger for a few long seconds after swallowing. A very interesting whiskey. It reminds me of Koval millet whiskey, but with significantly less spice and more richness. This is worth investigating if you find a bottle.

It's Thanksgiving eve. Time for a sample and the traditional viewing of Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Perhaps I should be tasting a bourbon rather than a New Zealander. Anyway…. Nose: A yeasty, berry aroma. Well-baked cranberry bread with a dash of cinnamon, vanilla, honey. A straightforward, simple nose but rich and tangible. Palate: A creamy, cinnamon spiced entry greets the palate. Similar to the nose, baked cranberry bread, vanilla and honey. A little black pepper bite with a dark chocolate sweetener. Finish: A medium length finish that is slightly drying and woody, fading with the same dark chocolate mocha and a peppery tingle. Overall: A decent sipper with a slightly limited nose and palate. But the few notes and flavors it holds, it delivers. Sips easy for a 53.4% abv whiskey. Thanks to a friend for the generous New Zealander sample. [86/100][Tasted: 11/22/23]

What's not to like about New Zealand? Gorgeous country with fjords, mountains, beaches, geothermal activity, and of course…Hobbits. But where they were always lacking was in whiskey. Yes…amazing pinot noir wines, but whiskey? Not so much. Sure they had the ghosted Dunedin distillery, but honestly, I felt those were too wine driven or weak. Until this one comes along. This is a TWE picked single cask. TWE picks are generally very good—they have immense buying power and sway. Aromas of Christmas mulled wine (too bad its June and 80 degrees F here). Taste of oak, cherries, nutmeg. Really well crafted and solid pick from TWE.

Aroma and appearance are appealing. The wine-like finish is noteworthy.
