About this bottle
Lagavulin 8 was introduced in 2016 to commemorate the distillery's bicentennial. Its character is designed to evoke the style of whisky potentially produced by Lagavulin around the 1880s, a period when Alfred Barnard documented distilleries across Great Britain. Barnard noted Lagavulin among a select few producing single malts suitable for unadulterated enjoyment, rather than solely for blending. As of November 2017, this whisky became a permanent fixture in the distillery's core range, moving from limited edition status with subsequent label updates.

Nose: The initial scent signals an Islay whisky. Intense peat and medicinal notes are accompanied by caramel and salt. It hints at its youth but is generally balanced on the nose.
Palate: It starts mellow but quickly warms up. The intense peat character from the nose is prominent. Ash, salted caramel, and burnt oak are noticeable. A wild whisky.
Finish: A medium-length finish with peat and spice.
Overall Review: Lagavulin 8 is a wild and, unfortunately, unbalanced whisky. The palate is somewhat uneven with a low body. The 48% alcohol is clearly discernible, especially on the palate.

A serious meeting with customers from Japan took place in a wine shop. We discussed business for about 5-10 minutes, and the rest of the time? We drank! We listened to Yo-Yo Ma's "Japanese Melodies" playing from a customer's phone! Before you read my thoughts, please know that I'm not really a whisky drinker and don't take my opinion too seriously. This spirit is light and forgettable, only notable for smoke and cigarette notes, worse than Talisker in my opinion. It's really not for me.

Nose: Lemon pith, rubber, brine, grapefruit sugar. Palate: Smoked vegetable soup, ash, light vanilla sweetness, a hint of lemon. This lacks the flavor depth of the 16yr, but the increased proof is beneficial. I'm confident I would enjoy anything Lagavulin releases, and this is no exception, though I would likely rank it slightly below similarly priced Ardbeg 10 and Laphroaig 10, as well as Port Charlotte 10.

A beautifully smoky nose with delicate floral notes remaining within the haze.
Campfire smoke and vanilla burst onto the palate, accompanied by soft wood and spice notes.
This scotch is an absolute delight, and I'm pleased I purchased it.
These higher-proof (92+), non-chill filtered peaty scotches are truly superb, and Lagavulin 8 is no exception. An undeniable success!

89 Nose: gentle smoke with sweetness, milk chocolate 22. Palate: nicely gentle smoke throughout, spicy, beautifully delicate, evolving notes, a bit of chocolate 23. Finish: beautifully gentle smoke throughout, spicy, chocolate, medium to long 22. Balance: nicely layered, even though it's quite young, the smoke is gentle but long, with spice and chocolate added 22.

The nose is sweet, reminiscent of toffee or pudding, which was unexpected. The flavor mirrors this sweetness, being mild and moderately rich. The finish is long despite the lighter body, and that's where the peat is noticeable. The low, smoldering finish persists for a considerable time, offering great enjoyment. This is one of those whiskies that builds gently to a peak; I love the balance of flavors.
