Kilchoman Spec's pick small batch No.1

This expression adds a touch of distinction to the core Kilchoman malt. Fruit notes from the Calvados cask are present but nicely overshadowed by the prominent salty smoke character. Notes of fallen apples fermenting on the ground, alongside the farm-like, unpasteurized cream essence of Machir Bay. The finish features charred vanilla and maritime rope notes with heavily seasoned wood. The smoke is not the typical slow-burning Islay BBQ meat style but more akin to a seared steak. Despite its youth, it still offers substantial flavor and complexity. I genuinely enjoy this, though I don't find the price increase over Machir Bay justified. Nevertheless, it's another high-quality release from Kilchoman... rated 87/100.

Composed of 70% bourbon barrel, 25% Calvados cask, and 5% sherry cask. Initial notes of apple and pear are present alongside some wood spice, hay, and iodine. Later, more malt notes emerge, with char and oaky vanilla from the bourbon cask. The sherry influence is minimal, barely detectable beneath the bourbon and Calvados. The finish offers salted cashew, a satisfying maritime peat smoke that harmonizes with a drier, tannic conclusion. A truly remarkable dram from Kilchoman. I'm keen to explore more single malts with a stronger Calvados presence.
