Keeping the Fire Stoked 53.327 (SMWS)

This sample was a gift from a friend. It's my initial encounter with an independent bottler's Scotch. The distillery is one I quite like, and the person who generously sent it to me also provided a glowing review. Nose: Lemon and custard emerge strongly from the glass. There's some warmth from cinnamon and black pepper, along with sea salt, seaweed, and the aroma of a campfire. A faint medicinal note and some nuttiness are present. A seafood scent, reminiscent of shrimp. Bottled at cask strength, this carries significant heat and peat. An excellent nose. Palate: Smoke, sea salt, and seaweed dominate. Medicinal, iodine characteristics are noticeable. More black pepper and citrus, specifically lemon. Some sweetness from toffee, vanilla, milk chocolate, and honey can be detected in the background, but they take a backseat to the classic Islay flavors. Ample oak presence. A powerful experience. Finish: Extended and intricate. It begins with more smoke and coastal notes. The shrimp aroma from the nose reappears, followed by a strong hit of lime citrus at an opportune moment. Plenty of black pepper and cinnamon. An absolute powerhouse at 58.9%. An incredible whisky. Considering a friend's review, the $60 price point seems like an exceptional value given its quality. My first experience with an independent bottler's Scotch is a very favorable one. I should start paying more attention to these. My only regret is that I won't be able to acquire a bottle for myself. Wow...this one surprised me. [Brand] was at one point a really good independent bottler, but lately has become mediocre. This is not one of those. This is a single cask 10 yr cask strength Caol Ila. Matured in simply refill ex-bourbon...nothing fancy. How do you know when a whisky is a good whisky? I think it’s pretty simple: 1) reasonable price, which makes you want to open and share, rather than keep stashed away; 2) great distillate and cask quality; 3) no marketing, flying under the radar, and let the liquid speak for itself; and 4) fly off the shelves despite lack of marketing and hype. Kilkerran 8 was one of those, at least in my recent memory. This is another. I paid barely $60. In minutes it was sold out. I had to dilute with some water, which is generally the case for me and CS whiskys. But the aroma...wow. Lemons grilling over a flame. Taste is grilled lobster, eating it in an old style diesel operated fishing boat. It’s simple and straightforward, just well crafted Islay. At USD $60..BUY on sight. Skip the hype and price gauging from others, and go for this instead.
