Kaiyō The Single Mizunara Oak Finish

Kaiyo has generally been a dependable Japanese whisky brand for me, and considering its reasonable price point, it's the one I reach for most often. This was actually my most affordable Kaiyo purchase to date, although, curiously, it's the only one with an age statement. This doesn't preclude the possibility that much of the spirit in some of the other releases could be older, but given how little information Japanese distillers/bottlers provide about their products, I'll likely never know for sure. Regardless, let's get to The Single. Aroma: Honey, toffee, and vanilla. Notes of apple and orange. Hints of sugar cookie. A touch of white pepper and oak. Palate: Golden raisin, pear, and apricot lead the way. Plum, date, and fig are present as well. A slice of apple. A strong malt and toffee presence. Sugar cookie notes. Vanilla and caramel are also detected. Hints of coffee. Toasted almond and walnut. A subtle oak character. Finish: White grape and golden raisin. Caramel, vanilla, and toffee. Coffee notes. White pepper and oak. The finish is of moderate to short duration. This is certainly the least memorable offering from Kaiyo. I always assumed the black label, Mizunura Oak (though they are all aged in it, this is likely what they refer to as Mizunura Oak), was the introductory Kaiyo expression, but I suppose this one can now claim that position. It's quite straightforward. I nearly thought I was coming down with something because it was so challenging to discern notes on the nose. Thankfully, the flavor profile offered a bit more vibrancy than the aroma suggested. Some decent taste, although still rather subdued. A very clean pour, though. I rated this a 3.25 previously, but at $55, I anticipate a bit more character. Save yourself $5 and opt for the black label instead – unless you're aiming to collect them all. It's a perfectly acceptable whisky, just slightly underwhelming when compared to the rest of their lineup. A 3.0 out of 5 rating.

I've generally had good experiences with Japanese whiskies. This single malt, aged at least 7 years and un-chill filtered, is a delicious scotch. The mizunara finish is quite evident, adding sandalwood and coconut creaminess over a very good malt whiskey base. It's rich in flavor with depth, savory, oceanic, sweet, and slightly bright. It's quite pleasing. A very distinct toasted peanut flavor is present in both the aroma and taste, making it quite unique.

I've appreciated this bottle considerably. The mizunara imparts significant uniqueness. Vanilla sweetness, butterscotch, spice, and incense are on the nose. The body is smooth and creamy, with the flavors truly unfolding in your mouth. Tannins are present on the finish. I would repurchase.

This one didn't particularly impress me. It's light in color, possesses a sharp, strong aroma, and lacks the smoothness of some of my preferred spirits, such as the Nikka Coffey Grain.
