About this bottle

This addition to the Beam Signature Craft line involves blending whiskey with brandy from a Spanish distillery. While aging or finishing whiskey, particularly Scotch, in ex-brandy barrels is not uncommon, the direct addition of liquid brandy to bourbon is unusual. Beam Suntory has previously used a similar method with one of its Canadian rye whiskies, but this particular expression may face scrutiny from bourbon purists. It is bottled at 43% ABV.

[12.16.21] I'm embarrassed by how long this bottle has been in my possession. I picked it up at the Jim Beam visitor center, deciding to try it. Their black label expression was fantastic, and their red wheat offerings were quite decent. This presents with a corn-forward, smooth spirit opening. The initial taste has a sharpness, but it quickly fades. The center has a salty/bitter quality that softens into a brandy-like conclusion (a dried, fruity whiskey). To be truthful, I'm not a big fan of brandy, so the finish doesn't compare to one reminiscent of red wine. I'll probably mix the remaining amount into some incredible Madison-style old fashioneds. However, it's not something I'd drink straight. Summary? A limited bourbon from Watershed, aged in cabernet barrels, is superior and similarly priced for those of us in the area.

The aroma is sweet, with hints of oak. The taste brings oak and a brandy-like sweetness. It finishes nutty, oaky, and sweet, with a sweet and oaky aftertaste that lingers.

Chadwick Fay 3.0

It's not terrible, but the brandy notes are a bit too dominant as a mixer. I'm not a big brandy enthusiast, so the flavor really stands out to me.

Vern Holden 4.0

A sweet profile with traces of oak. The finish is smooth and long, bursting with fruit.

I'm a fan.
