James Eadie Blair Athol 10 (Cask No. 307362)

(First pour) Smell: Natural honey, biscuits. Faintly spirit-like but not artificial. Richer. A hint of floral, herbal greenhouse. Possibly some lemon candy notes as it develops. A touch of pear. Smells rich and honeyed but with a herbal undertone. Taste: Oily, the honey remains and some rich malt comes through. Caramel on the second taste with the expected oak notes. A light smokiness but increasingly like toffee on both smell and taste. Can almost perceive the lychee note. Finish: Some rounded tropical fruit, soft caramel. With water: Smell intensified, malty chocolate powder with that underlying herbal note. Smells like butterscotch candies. Very rich and sweet smelling with a slight balancing sharpness underneath. Taste more approachable, has more of the oak and spice, especially at the back. Finish has a bit of that earthy, clay-like quality from the flora and fauna, rich and lengthy again. Finish becomes more leafy/iris-like as it continues. Overall: Not what I anticipated at all, but that's not a bad thing. So rich, loads of flavor that truly opens up with water. Would be a great late summer/early autumn drink for the slight herbal note that balances the honey.
