J.P. Wiser's Rye (DISCONTINUED)

Inside because the weather is awful, so I'll be trying some 50ml pours. First is J.P. Wiser's Rye, a Canadian blend. It's a standard 80 proof and appears very clean in the Glencairn. I'd guess a full bottle isn't pricey, though I don't know the exact cost. The aroma has the typical notes for a blended rye whiskey: oak, spice, and a whisper of vanilla. Nothing unexpected, other than they're all somewhat subdued. It's pretty nice on the palate, especially for a rye (whiskey style I don't usually prefer). Vanilla and oak are prominent, with the pepper and cinnamon flavors less so. The finish is brief and direct. It's smooth and velvety, with no harshness. It's rare for me to like rye or Canadian whiskies. I generally suggest them only for cocktails. This one holds its own when drunk straight, and I truly value that. This might be the best Canadian whiskey I've had. Salud.

For the cost, this was a resounding success. Setting aside the price, I am still quite pleased with the value received. I would even go so far as to state I would prefer this over standard Crown most days of the week, potentially upsetting some Crown enthusiasts. I agree with a previous comment about not identifying this as a rye if tasted blind. It lacks the expected spice and instead resembles rye-influenced fresh bread. It is fairly sweet with a strong alcohol aroma. An update. I likely won't repurchase this but it provided another pleasant evening with companions over ice. Sweet and fresh, with mild spice. I gave the remaining half bottle to a homeless individual; at least he was direct and requested a drink instead of money "for food".

Appearance: This blended Canadian had a caramel syrup color with thick watery legs. Nose: The aroma was inoffensive in every way. Notes like caramel apples, maple syrup, and vanilla greeted me first, followed by ground black pepper, green banana, and a faint hint of fresh carrots. Taste: The uncomplicated palate boasted a creamy mouthfeel, with notes of peppery spice, Irish cream coffee creamer, and vanilla. Finish: It had a shorter length sweet finish. Thoughts: This whisky was pretty alright. Nothing to write home about, but for an easy sipper while watching The Office after getting home from work, I didn’t mind it one bit. It’s definitely a sweet Canadian blend, but if you want a cheap easy drink, it’ll do. Thanks, a friend! Cheers!

JP Wisers Rye, bottled in Canada, exclusively sold in the US. The recipe/bottle was recently updated and is now named triple barrel rye. ABV: 40%. No age stated, minimum age is 3 years. This version is discontinued and this bottle likely dates from 2014/2015. Aroma: minimal, with some fruity notes and vanilla/maple sweetness. Taste: light to medium sweetness, tart, grainy, mild oak/used barrel influence, and some spice. Astringency on the finish. Quite smooth with a few minor off notes; I would try the newer iteration if I encountered it. Cost: $15.00 for a 750 ml bottle that included glasses (gift set). Grade: C

Nose of sweet almond cake and light floral notes. Flavor is almond extract mellowed by powdered sugar and maple syrup. Nothing complex or subtle here. Decent value.

First Rye. Actually finished it and forgot to leave a rating. I wouldn't refuse it, but it won't be my top selection after tasting a few others.
