Isle of Raasay Na Sia Single Cask Unpeated Ex-Rye Cask

(Good Spirits Co. Glasgow – Virtual Isle of Raasay Na Sia Tasting, November 24, 2022). This was an engaging tasting showcasing the Na Sia (The Six in Scots Gaelic) single cask range from Raasay. Prior to Raasay releasing its initial single malt whisky from their distillery, I was invited to sample the aged spirit from the same range as this tasting. I have compared the current whisky to the spirit aged prior to full maturation as a reference, shown at the end of the notes. Aroma: Butterscotch, toffee caramel, corn, malt biscuit, baking spice, brine. Very subtle on the nose. Taste: Black pepper, chili, vanilla, spirit-forward. Quite like new make spirit! Light tropical fruit, pineapple, pears. Finish: Extended finish. Ash, oak, burnt caramel. Compared against: Spirit aged for 25 months in ex-Woodford Reserve Rye casks. The 25-month spirit is much lighter and harsher, with hot pepper and a sour, ashy aftertaste. The whisky keeps the peppery notes but adds more tropical fruit and smooths out the layers. The Raasay representative leading the tasting confirmed that the initial batches of Na Sia Rye cask were indeed Woodford Reserve Rye, but future releases might incorporate a variety of other Rye casks. It tied for last place out of the six drams, receiving 6% of the final vote for favorite of the night. 76% of those present indicated they enjoyed the whisky.

Somewhat dull, with a sharp black pepper quality.
