Inchfad 15 yr by Thompson Brothers

I acquired a small 200ml bottle of this some time ago while visiting London. I don't recall ever hearing of Inchfad, but it appears to be the heavily peated variant of Loch Lomond, produced using pot stills but with an added rectifying column in place of the swan neck. I'm not sure how that structural modification affects a whisky, but whatever it does, it resulted in a very successful final product. It has aromas of damp earth and the smell of rain on dry soil. The taste is umami, with earthy, mushroom-like notes combined with chocolate and nuts. It's truly distinctive. The smoke is present but integrated with the earthiness. It's somewhat like a peated Balvenie, but with less emphasis on fruit and heather. A fantastic purchase, especially considering I paid only about $20-30 USD for the 200ml bottle.
