High West Cask Collection Blend of Straight Whiskeys Oloroso Sherry Barrel Finish

The aroma strongly hints at sherry with ripe orchard fruits, plus caramel flan, barrel char, oak, and a touch of herbal lemongrass. The ethanol is noticeable if you inhale deeply, but not overwhelming. Upon tasting, there are excellent sherry notes of dried fruit like golden raisin, date, fig, prune, apple, and citrus. This is followed by bourbon characteristics of nutty toffee and vanilla. The flavors possess a good richness. The finish is extremely smoky, almost like scotch. It's quite surprising. Fortunately, some oak, nutmeg, and caramel emerge after the smoke subsides, nearly redeeming it, but the smoke's intensity was relentless. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied, neither rough nor smooth, so it's neutral. There are positive aspects here, especially the sherry influence, but ultimately, a flawed and unbalanced finish detracted from the experience. Considering the price, while it usually costs $69.99 in my area, a local store discounted it significantly to $37.99, prompting me to try it. Sadly, it doesn't even warrant that price. A letdown.
