NEAT AROMA - Faint rye notes are present but are overpowered by prominent raspberry, plum, and port wine. MOUTHFEEL - Delicious, full mouthfeel featuring vanilla, raspberry, and ripe plum notes. AFTERTASTE - A very extended aftertaste. A wave of rye spice initially appears, swiftly followed by sweet and tangy plum skin. WORTH BUYING? - The cost is frustrating, but this is a wonderful whiskey. I've only tasted a sample from a previous batch and have not been fortunate enough to find a bottle until now. If you enjoy wine-finished whiskies, I would suggest purchasing this if you haven't tried it before. For those who have had earlier batches at a lower price and believe the quality has declined, I understand your reluctance to pay $150. If I had purchased this expression years ago for $80-120, I would be quite displeased with the price increase and perceived reduction in quality. About this bottle
High West's seasonal offering, A Midwinter Night's Dram, reaches its thirteenth iteration with Act 13. This edition is built upon the brand's Rendezvous Rye, a combination of straight rye whiskeys aged between 4 and 10 years. These whiskeys are produced from two distinct mash bills: one utilizes 95% rye and 5% malted barley, distilled in Indiana, while the other comprises 80% rye and 20% malted rye, created at High West in Utah. Subsequently, this rye blend undergoes a secondary maturation in ruby and tawny port casks. The Act number corresponds to the batch (Act 13 is the 2025 release), and the Scene indicates the bottling date. Nose: candied plums, cardamom, vanilla, star anise, rye spices. Palate: sweet rye, nutmeg, cinnamon, nutty, black jam, tawny port. Finish: medium warmth and length, rye spices and black pepper. It's a pity the suggested retail price has jumped to $150. This is a good finished rye, but superior bottles exist for about a third of the cost.
An amazing mouthfeel with exquisite flavor. Notes of plum, vanilla, and chocolate with subtle rye and port influence. A very good bottle, but somewhat pricey. Worth trying at least once.
A rather pleasant and flavorful rye. Its lower proof allows for easy consumption with a mild burn. A great rye overall!
