Haku Vodka

Haku vodka, a rice-based spirit from Japan, is a dependable choice, though it carries a premium cost. Its value proposition is questionable, but it performs reliably in all cocktails I've used it in. The aroma presents rice pudding and yuzu. The taste is dominated by vanilla and sweetness, yet it remains smooth. The finish is exceptionally clean, with minimal burn and hints of lemon and pepper. While it may not astound you, it's well-crafted. If its price were comparable to Ketel One, Absolut, or Sobieski, my rating would be higher. It's still a solid option, but its higher cost makes it difficult to justify when more affordable alternatives exist, although it might be the most budget-friendly rice vodka available.

This is a very pleasant, smooth vodka. Although I'm generally not a big vodka enthusiast, I keep several different vodkas in my collection for mixing rather than drinking straight. I was searching for Baijiu but couldn't find any due to a shortage. I left with this and was pleasantly surprised! Calling it "Japanese vodka" is a smart marketing move, as most Americans won't be familiar with Overproof Shochu. Made entirely from rice, it tastes light and lovely with a short finish, a very faint floral aroma that reappears subtly as you swallow. It truly shines when drunk neat but can easily get lost in a cocktail. It's so smooth you might end up drinking more than intended.

Lovely. I was trying to discern why it wasn't sake and why it wasn't shochu (which is frustratingly hard to obtain in the UK). From my understanding, sake isn't distilled (this is), and its fermentation process might differ. Shochu is limited to 36% ABV (this is 40%) and cannot be filtered through charcoal (this is). However, it truly resembles a very good rice shochu, which is far more interesting than standard vodka.

A Japanese vodka produced from... you guessed it, white rice! This is a genuinely good spirit, smooth with a pleasant complexity, subtly sweet and enjoyable to drink. It's certainly not a purist's style of vodka, but that's a separate discussion, much like comments about "shochu." The price-to-value ratio is good, though it might depend heavily on how you plan to consume it.

The label mentions the rice is "polished." It makes one wonder what meticulous hands are responsible for buffing these grains. Regardless, this vodka is as good as it gets, meaning it's extremely neutral. It's clean with a faint papery quality. It seems as though it's been filtered through the essence of Japan, and the outcome is agreeable. This is everything one could desire in a vodka. Well done.
