I absolutely adore this whisky. Their standard bourbon is quite amazing as well, but I truly love this whisky. It's a bourbon with cherry flavor, but most cherry whiskies have that unpleasant cough syrup taste. This is genuinely a whisky with its cherry notes highlighted. It makes a fantastic old fashioned and is also pretty great straight up.

About this bottle
Great Traverse Distillery, established in 2007 in Traverse City, Michigan, is part of the growing grain-to-glass movement in the US, using regional grains for its distillates. The facility distills and ages all of its own spirits. Their Cherry Whiskey is a flavored variation of its straight bourbon whiskey, which is crafted with a mash bill of 70% corn, 20% rye, and 10% malted barley. This bourbon is then combined with 3% cherry concentrate sourced from Leelanau Fruit Company. It is bottled at 40% ABV.

The aroma smells just like a fresh jar of cocktail cherries. Some of the sweetness diminishes as it opens up, but that sweet cocktail cherry overtone remains dominant. The palate has that same cherry profile, but it also picks up a vanilla and spice note that blend and are reminiscent of Cherry Vanilla Coke. The finish is purely cherries from a tin.
It had an oily texture and went down smoothly. The cherry flavor wasn't overpowering, which was a positive. This is definitely whiskey, not some sweet liqueur. I needed to add some water to sip it neat. It tasted better while I was on vacation.
The name says it all. Quite a cherry bomb. Otherwise, complexity is somewhat limited given its ABV. Overall easy to drink though and a solid choice for mixing as well.
I like this one because it is not sweet. Tart cherry is perfect. I use this for my Old Fashioned.
Makes a smooth Old Fashioned. It's just alright neat or on the rocks.
