Glenturret 1977 29 Year Single Cask

The aroma is unexpectedly light and fruity, yet with a richness that hints at malt and extended, slow maturation. It carries notes of tropical fruits reminiscent of Westward and funky rum. Overall, it has a pleasant smell, though nothing particularly groundbreaking on the nose. The palate offers a wonderful fruity sweetness, masterfully done, making my mouth water. Delightful lemon is present alongside sweet apricot. If it were solely this fruitiness, it could have been a uniquely wonderful success, but unfortunately, there's also a note of mildewed bread. Even with that off-putting bread flavor, it holds its own. Some spices emerge, and surprisingly, robust black licorice appears. This is far, far richer and more candy-like than Glenfiddich Grand Cru. It does possess that troublesome flavor, however. The combination of flavors is intriguing but never achieves balance. The licorice and a numbing cardboard taste are quite prominent, yet they lack the supporting underlying barrel flavor or rich fruit. It doesn't taste older than 18 years, and even that would be a stretch. This is certainly superior to the Glenturret 28, and I'd be content drinking it, but I would always prefer something like Port Charlotte 10 or Glenfarclas 25, regardless of cost. Eventually, some subtle Sherry cherry notes emerge, making it slightly more engaging. Sadly, I don't believe this quite reaches the quality of a 15-year-old. It's interesting, but in terms of pure quality, I'd rate it more as a 14. There are some pleasant hints of sweet apricot, but they are truly insufficient to compensate for the cardboard and general oddness.

Intense alcohol and wood scent, presenting as incredibly rich and intricate. Hints of fruit or berries are also present. The taste features robust oak and cherry, harmonized exceptionally well. A lengthy, rich finish lingers, coating the mouth. Quite pleasing.

Simply wonderfully balanced and delightful. Mellow and sweet. Enjoyed without dilution.
