Nose: Malty and savory, similar to balsamic vinegar or beef extract. Stewed fruit, gooseberries, and red berries are present. There's an aroma of decomposed lignin and fermentation sulfur that is more pleasant than it sounds. It possesses an umami character that adds depth and intrigue to the nose. Palate: A semi-sweet cereal entry. As it develops, notes of muesli with abundant fruits and nuts emerge, along with that same umami quality detected on the nose. The texture is oily, and the sulfurous note contributes body without any off-flavors. Finish: Medium. Flavors of buttered black bread, white wheat toast, and roasted nuts. This is a classic refill-cask whisky that emphasizes malt and cereal notes. There is no overwhelming cask influence or complicated finishing; the pleasant range of aromas and flavors is easy to appreciate. It's a straightforward, no-nonsense, good Scotch single malt whisky. It's a shame there has never been an official distillery bottling of Glentauchers, as it's a delightful distillate. My tasting notes indicate I've sampled six Glentauchers expressions over the years, including this one, and I've never rated it below 83/100. The majority of its production goes into Ballantine’s blended whiskies, which likely contributes to that blend's pleasant character. Gordon & MacPhail has (or at least used to have) a standing license to bottle Glentauchers as a semi-official release under their “Distillery Labels” range. It has been available for decades as semi-annual releases in batches ranging from 12-14 years of age. The casks, which are high-quality refill hogsheads, are supplied by Gordon & MacPhail and filled at the distillery. I particularly enjoyed this whisky with a splash of water, as it revealed delightful barley sugar notes and made the already pleasing oily texture even smoother, giving it a creamy and buttery quality. "Good": 84/100 (3.75 stars)
