GlenDronach Cask Strength Batch 11

This single malt from Glendronach Batch 11, bottled at a natural cask strength of 59.8% ABV, is a top-tier whisky and a definite contender for my top 5 of 2023. Matured in Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks, it presents a lovely chestnut color. The nose, palate, and finish are all exceptional, demonstrating perfect balance. The nose is incredibly velvety and sweet, with hazelnut, orange jam, figs, quince, and a 'whisky chocolate' note, plus almonds, school glue, coffee, and cocoa. After the first sip, it evolves to red fruits, cranberries, rum and raisins, marmalade with chili, and s'mores. The palate continues the experience with hazelnut, chocolate, wasabi, raisins, a wine-like character, dates, sugar, blackberry marmalade, red fruits, caramel custard, and stroopwafels – all remarkably clean and powerful. The finish is spicy with chili peppers, fruit spice, raisins, a subtle saltiness, and ginger. This whisky is otherworldly, a standout from my favorite distillery. I highly recommend acquiring several bottles to savor.

Exactly what one would anticipate. A great sherried scotch that packs a punch in both alcohol and flavor. Cask strength whiskeys can be a bit overwhelming for me at times, but I am genuinely enjoying this one. It has my preferred flavor profile with the sweetness of the sherry combined with that slight toasted/char flavor without smoke or peat. This is likely tied with Blue Spot for me in terms of favorite cask strength whiskeys. I would give the edge to Blue Spot in terms of mouthfeel, though. $100 for a 700ml bottle isn't cheap, but I can't complain considering the quality and that it's 60% ABV.

Pleasant sherry sweetness is apparent on both the aroma and the palate. Rich, deep, and immersive flavors coat the tongue with notes of toffee, caramel, a burst of sherry, lightly roasted coffee, milk chocolate, new leather, and oak stave. Truly a pleasure; the finish is medium length and ends semi-dry. A superb Highland Scotch that offers great value for the whisky enthusiast. Highly recommended.

Nose: A rich mix of dark fruits, deep sherry, and comforting spices. Palate: Bold flavors of ripe berries, dark chocolate, and oak, complemented by a lively spice. Finish: Extended and captivating, with flowing sweet sherry, oak, and a lasting spicy warmth.

Finished the bottle. This was a superb bottle. Still enjoyed with an ice cube. It's rich, slightly sweet, and succulent, featuring notes of orange marmalade, dried red fruits, honey, mulled wine, sweet tea, and baking spices. The long finish combines sweet, bitter, and spicy elements.

First pours from the bottle. A truly delightful nose and palate. A sherry bomb. I also found it improved with ice. It will be interesting to observe its evolution as the bottle opens over time.
