Glenallachie 10 Year Cask Strength Batch 5

An outstanding whiskey, though potent, its alcoholic bite quickly fades behind a rich complexity where sweetness reigns without cloying. As each batch varies, I cannot make sweeping statements, but this particular batch 9 is beautifully harmonious while retaining its unique character. On the nose, vanilla and date hit first, then quickly yield to faint floral hints and a whisper of caramel. The entry on the palate is syrupy, smooth, with an upfront sweetness that gives way to lightly bitter, toasted notes, finishing with hints of toffee and caramel. Black pepper is also present. A second taste brings toffee to the forefront; its thickness enhances the creaminess. Despite the alcohol, it's remarkably easy to drink, very well hidden. Lingering notes of wood and toast conclude the experience splendidly.

I've appreciated several expressions from GlenAllachie this year, and I was particularly curious about the Batch Strength series that was released periodically. Following a somewhat disappointing encounter with the award-winning Batch 4, this Batch Strength 5 proved to be significantly better, effectively restoring my confidence in these high-proof, 10-year-old releases. Presented at 55.9% ABV, with a chestnut color; aged in Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso, Rioja, and Virgin Oak Casks. On the nose, it's remarkably wine-forward. An explosion of Pedro Ximénez, coffee beans, banana, dates. Subtle sugar, caramelized apple, candied oranges. After the initial taste, it revealed a note akin to "Patron Tequila cafe"; royal caramel flan. Acidic prunes and dulce de leche. The palate was as impressive as the nose. Oranges, coffee, salt, and pepper. Abundant Oloroso sherry characteristics, a very sophisticated caramel. The finish was exceptional. A marvelous, well-crafted creamy chocolate, mild peat, tobacco, and salt. It's quite delicate and refined for a cask-strength whisky. Further sips unveiled additional notes: hazelnut and raisins. Overall, this release significantly surpassed the World Whiskies Awards 2021 winner, batch No. 4. I truly enjoyed this dram, finding it highly complex, not at all harsh, and incredibly pleasing. My rating for this superb single malt is 95 out of 100.

Surprisingly smooth straight. Sweetness upfront, followed by caramel, cola, and toffee. The end has some pepper with dark chocolate on the finish. With water, it becomes sweeter overall, with cayenne pepper and semi-sweet chocolate at the end, finishing with some warmth.

Aroma: Rich dark fruits, sherry influence, caramelized sugar, and cocoa. Taste: Cocoa, sherry, red wine notes, with a hint of raspberry. End: Lingering dark chocolate bitterness. Comment: Subsequent experiences suggested it improved further. Initially, I felt this was not as good as batch 3, but comparing them directly altered my perspective.

This almost perfect example of excellent sherried whisky. Such a good balance of sweetness, spice, hint of smoke, lots of toffee, caramel and oak. Finished longer and leaves you wanting to pour more. Perfect for Friday pour / something special.

Fantastic. Quite possibly the top unpeated single malt scotch I’ve sampled. Deep flavor from being undiluted. Abundant dark fruit notes. Zero flaws detected. I enjoyed it neat with no harshness. 10/10
